I have been learning something important about myself in the last couple of years. I love to spoil people. I love lavishing others with love in various forms. I love showing intentionality in caring about a person. It feeds me to really celebrate another person. I first started noticing it when I was involved in throwing baby showers for a few of my dearest friends. This year my passions were expressed also with birthday parties for my kids. I mean, it is always fun to spoil other people, but nothing beats knocking the socks off your own kids. My heart gets flittery just thinking about the look on Silas' face this year when he got to see the decorations for his 6 year old Lego Party.
Of course, none of these ideas are totally originals (thankfully, many people on pintrest have gone before me in birthday party planning of all kinds), but they are expressed in original ways (mostly meaning on a severely reduced budget than the blog-able birthday parties of this day and age). Regardless, the majorly late night I put in to make all these paper Lego decorations, scouring around for the official Lego font to make his birthday sign, tediously applying frosting to marshmallows that would later serve as the raised connecting dots on his cake, and personalizing each little invitation to be sent out, were TOTALLY WORTH it to see Silas really feel love in a special kind of way. The morning of his birthday he came flying down the stairs raced into the kitchen and stopped dead in his tracks.
"No. Way. This is AWESOME!"
He kept asking how I did each thing, because they looked so real, it's just like the real legos! This was a huge pat on the back for me since on birthday #3 he all but scoffed at my attempt at creating a Thomas the Train birthday cake. It's the little evidences of improvement that make all the difference :)
I actually didn't do a great job photographing all the little touches, but another thing I am learning about myself is that I remember things much more impressively than they really were. So, not having photographic evidence of uneven cake displays or a letter starting to come unstuck on the birthday sign, actually preserves my mommy perfection in my mind :) Most importantly, Silas and his friends had an incredibly fun time all together and my sweet son was properly celebrated.
Silas' long time friend, Aiden, behind the "I'm watching you, sucker" Lego man...
Aiden is actually a very happy and friendly guy...
But he is also able to do a pretty good job looking ninjago like
This was the big display, I am already feeling tempted to delete this since in real life (via the lens of Sommer Bury) this looked a lot cooler. Anyway, I made his name from legit Lego font, and then built a virtual lego '6' out of paper legos (which I punched out about 3 million little dots and individually attached them to the paper with sticky pads so that they stuck out like real lego dots, or at least I remember about 3 million through the Sommer Bury lens). I also stuck the paper legos on other windows in the kitchen area.
Silas and his friend, Jackson. They worked in pairs to build lego cars and then we had a lego car race.
The cake. Super Mommy confession here. Last week we had Everett, Daniela and our family friends (meaning our friends who are our family here) over on Silas' actual birthday. I made the cake to be ready on that day. It looked awesome...for real...not just in my mind. I had planned to make another one for when his buddies came, but we didn't eat all of it with the family. So I cake recycled. Shameful, I know. I froze the remainder of the original cake, refrosted the sides we had cut from, and served it again. I live in Oregon, recycling is what we do. And, honestly, I figured most little boys could care less about the cake appearance, they just want to eat it. I was right, the marshmallows were the biggest hit.
Case in point, Silas' friend, Tag...marshmallow already missing from his piece.
A few of the Lego Boys.Trey came to the party, he loved the cake, too.
Jewel ate cake, she was the cutest one at the party :)
I LOVE watching kids open their presents. Not only is the birthday kid excited to get new stuff, but the attendees cannot wait to see the birthday kid open the gift they brought. These boys gave Silas hints about their presents several times before we reached the appointed present opening time.
Again, Silas' face...priceless
This was a really good one.
Givin' thank you hugs
REAL thank you hugs!!
This was the card Jackson made for Silas. There was a lot to do with bad guys, jail, getting caught...they all spent a long time talking about this one. Close to the heart of all young boys.
With all the excitement and activity and double parties, I have to say I am thankful that the cake is out of the freezer, the frosting is gone, the decorations are now up in Silas' room and off my kitchen windows, and we are ready to gear up for a grown up party here :)
These pictures are from Jewel's 3rd birthday and Trey's 1st. I never posted them, we were living at Jenn's at the time, and although the party was a HUGE hit, the business there kept me from getting these on the blog.
We decorated the whole house for Jewel's birthday, balloons and signs everywhere.
We drew a '3' on the door
And she wore her birthday shirt all day.
On Trey's birthday we did a combined party for them. For a boy and a girl? Cannot go wrong with Mickey and Minnie...it was the TRUE Mickey Mouse Clubhouse at Jenn's. I (again) did not get great pictures of everything. On the front door we painted a big sign that said "Come Inside, It's Fun Inside" with Mickey Mouse ears (it's a line from the theme song of the show for those of you who don't keep up with Mickey these days). The kids ate "Hot Dogs, Hot Dogs, Hot Diggity Dogs" for dinner (more from the show). And Jewel ROCKED the Minnie mouse outfit (for about 10 minutes before it was too itchy)
We strung balloons from tree to tree in the back yard and turned the play structure into a real CLUBHOUSE.
Then I made Mickey ear cupcakes for the birthday kids.
And Everett modeled them, held them while we sang, and passed them out to the kiddos...*sigh* what a great brother I have.
Jewel's face...priceless.
Anyway, so there is the evidence for my own sake, that I am doing my best to make birthdays awesome. Not that I am trying to be Mom of the Year (unless someone knows of a person that is giving out this illusive award, in which case I am totally trying and please feel free to submit these photos when you nominate me), but I am hoping to make each of my kids memories that are tangible evidences prayerfully coupled with heartfelt recognition of our incredible love for them.
